The Love Chemicals of Chocolate: Antioxidants

Antioxidants are a group of substances which are contained in a wide range of foods and protect our health by fighting the dangerous effects of free radicals.

These free radicals, which are created by exposure to radiation, nicotine, pollution as well as some natural digestive processes, break down our healthy cells and cause disease including cancer and heart disease.

Antioxidant substances include vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene and selenium. Dark chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants, but milk chocolate is not; in fact milk that is digested alongside dark chocolate will break down the antioxidants’ effect.
