She Was No Virgin

The name Virginia Johnson may not ring any bells. How about Masters & Johnson? Ah ha. She is the lady who was not behind the man but most certainly alongside him, the famous sex researcher. Together they made female orgasm isn’t a roller coaster graph and have left countless women huffing and puffing multiply with the knowledge that they can abd should just hang in there for lots more.

Virginia Johnson joined William Masters in his sex research in 1957. It is said that he was looking for a women who had been married and “knew something about sex”. She had worked as a secretary but in time became a full partner in the research and publications that he had initiated.

She had been divorced three times when they met. For some reason their professional efforts, which involved observing masturbation and intercourse, led to some personal research after work hours. They coupled up within a year and spent over thirty years together.

Their collaboration produced books and therapeutic techniques that are still widely used today. But apparently his spiffy bow tie lost its sex appeal because they split up in 1993 and we heard no more of her in any personal sexy context.

Johnson died this week, aged 88. All of us who learned somehow of the female capacity for multiple orgasm or who experienced the “sensate focus” technique of sex therapy can say a personal thank you to this brave and forward thinking woman, who might just have been the key to everything that was achieved by the historical duo.
