A good gynecologist-obstetrician should be looking above the waist too, and not only at the breasts! Many general health factors are affected by periods and hormones. Anemia is one, because women with regular periods sometimes have low iron levels. Cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other factors related to your well-being should be monitored by the gynecologist, especially as related to contraception, pregnancy and HRT (hormone replacement therapy).
Some women tend to treat their gynecologist as the family physician, visiting the former regularly and forgoing the latter. If this is the case, it is especially important to have them run general tests, just to make sure everything running smoothly (if that can ever be said about normal feeling biology).
